burbank la tree shade project program

Reduce the cost of air conditioning by shading your home or place of business with trees!

Residents and businesses in Burbank each have the option of choosing up to three trees each. Find out below how you may take part in the program.

Why Participate in This Event?

Trees, with their ability to provide cooling shade for buildings and decrease the need for air conditioning by 10% to 50%, can be likened to natural air conditioners. They also contribute to air purification by capturing harmful pollutants and cleansing the air we inhale.

500 trees will be planted in Burbank. The City of Burbank’s Parks and Recreation Department, Public Works Department, and Burbank Water and Power have all worked together to achieve this objective. The Burbank 2035 General Plan and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan are in alignment with the Plant For A Greener Burbank campaign.

Step 1: Schedule an Appointment

To cut down on your air conditioning usage, set an appointment with the arborist for BWP’s Shade Tree Program by calling (818) 957-8196. If you are a tenant in Burbank, make sure to secure the property owner’s written permission before joining the program.

Step 2: Consultation with Our Certified Arborist

A certified arborist will come to your residential or commercial property to help you identify optimal locations for shade. Once these sites are selected, make sure to consult with Dig Alert to ensure there are no underground utility lines that could be disrupted on your property.

Step 3: Choose Your Trees

With over twenty different tree species to pick from, you’re bound to find one that you love! The program provides mature trees housed in 15-gallon containers, each weighing approximately 60 pounds.

Step 4: Prepare the Ground for Your Trees

After the consultation, your trees will be delivered within three weeks. During this waiting period, you need to prepare your property for tree planting. Only dig holes in the locations specified by the arborist. Each tree delivery will include stakes, ties, and arbor guards.

Step 5: Plant Your Trees!

As soon as the trees are delivered, plant them! Shade trees are low-maintenance and with the right planting method and watering schedule, they can establish their roots effectively. BWP conducts inspections to verify the trees have been planted in the correct locations. Non-compliant participants will be billed $90 for each tree planted in the wrong location.
